"Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days." -Daniel 10:12-14 -The Old Testament
Perhaps no other Biblical book, excluding Revelation, deals with the fate of this planet like the Old Testament Prophet- Daniel. The reference above raises some interesting ideas regarding the fate of nations and what is working behind the scenes.

Daniel seems to be told by a godly 'messenger' that there exists 'princes' behind the nations of this planet. These 'princes' appear to imply a spiritual force more powerful than any physical army. What is more interesting regarding these 'princes', is the implication that the prayers from a godly human individual can influence these powerful spiritual beings and open up a top secret operation of great importance to the destiny of these nations.

Could it be that the spiritual forces behind the nations are in a large part determined by the direct influence of the godly individuals in that nation? There are scriptures that seem to confirm this:

"That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes. And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes: Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it. And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake. And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there. And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake. And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake. And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place." -Genesis 18:25-33 -The Old Testament

"...The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." -James 5:16 -The New Testament

The military might of the nations are at the mercy of these 'princes' no matter how powerful their technology or how great their manpower. Further, if a nation refuses to heed the advice and instructions of God's prophets, it is equivalent to going into battle without intelligence:
"The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works. There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine." -Psalms 33:13-19 -The Old Testament

"Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." -Amos 3:7 -The Old Testament

What Daniel discovered, and few military leaders know today, is that the course of a nation's future and battles are determined by the prayers of the righteous individuals of that nation and the spiritual 'princes' that are given power through those prayers. I believe that every nation has a spiritual prince- good or evil. When a nation turns its back on God's laws as set out in the Bible and refuses to heed His prophet's advice, the evil prince is able to gain authority over its leaders and guide it in a destructive direction.

There is one exception to this rule that should be understood; God, in His wisdom, reserves the right to intervene for His purposes and end. If not for this, there would be no nation of Israel today! America stands at a unique and awesome point in time. It is on the verge of being turned over to the prince of evil. There are no guarantees that it will ever return to favor in God's eyes again. There is no Biblical foundation for our eternal endurance such as  that promised to Israel.

Alas, the messenger cries out:

"And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand." -Daniel 12:9-10 -The Old Testament
